Becoming a student pilot is the first formal step toward earning a pilot certificate (like a private pilot license). The process is straightforward but regulated, primarily by the FAA in the United States.

You can start taking flying lessons without a student pilot certificate, even if you are younger than 16, but you need one before you can fly solo (without an instructor on board).

Eligibility Requirements:

• Be at least 16 years old

• Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.

• Be able to provide a copy of your U.S. birth certificarte or U.S. Passport.

• For non-US citizens, there may be additional TSA security vetting steps.

• No prior flight experience or education is required.
