Course Objective
Build on your existing CFI certificate to add the Multi-Engine Instructor rating. This lets you teach in twins, help students earn their multi-engine add-on or commercial multi privileges, and rack up quality multi time while instructing, all under Part 61 at your home base, Terrell Municipal Airport (KTRL).
FAA Prerequisites:
Current FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with Airplane Single-Engine Land (ASEL) privileges
Commercial Pilot or ATP certificate with Airplane Multi-Engine Land (AMEL) rating
At least 15 hours PIC in multi-engine airplanes (logbook review required)
Valid FAA medical
No additional FAA written exam needed for the MEI add-on, just the practical test
Training Breakdown:
Ground Portion -
Multi-engine aerodynamics & Vmc concepts
Performance charts, weight & balance, systems (props, fuel, electrical)
Engine-out emergencies, single-engine ops, and failure recognition
Risk management & decision-making in twins
Instructional techniques: how to teach multi maneuvers safely and effectively
FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for Flight Instructor - Multi-Engine
Flight Portion -
Dual instruction in our multi-engine aircraft: Piper PA-23
Key maneuvers: slow flight, stalls, Vmc demo, engine failures (simulated), one-engine-inop approaches/landings/go-arounds
Instructor-specific scenarios: teaching from the right seat, verbalizing procedures, handling student errors
Typical hours: 5-10 dual flight hours (varies by your multi experience; less if you're already proficient)
Duration & Scheduling -
Flexible Part 61, train at your pace or go accelerated!
Accelerated option: often 4-7 days intensive (weather & aircraft availability permitting), similar to local commercial multi programs
Ends with the MEI checkride with a local DPE (fee not included to be paid directly to the examiner)

Estimated Investment
MEI Course: $3,500 flat rate - covers everything: ground training, flight instruction hours, aircraft rental, and checkride prep (note: examiner fees are separate). Great value compared to many out-of-town accelerated programs that run much higher.
