Getting Started as an International Student at Terrell Aviation
Welcome to Terrell Aviation! We're excited to help pilots from around the world earn their FAA certificates and ratings right here in sunny North Texas at Terrell Municipal Airport (KTRL). With our Part 61 training, favorable weather, low traffic, and experienced instructors, we make it straightforward and enjoyable for foreign students to train for Sport Pilot, Private Pilot, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, or even CFI certifications.
As a non-U.S. citizen or non-resident alien, there are important federal requirements to complete before starting flight training. These ensure security and compliance with U.S. regulations. Note: Terrell Aviation is a Part 61 school, so we do not issue Form I-20 or sponsor M-1/F-1 student visas directly. If your training plan involves full-time study (typically more than 18 hours/week), you'll need an M-1 visa and should select a SEVP-approved school that can provide I-20 forms. For shorter courses, part-time training, or if you're already in the U.S. on another visa, options may differ - contact us to discuss your situation.
Step-by-Step Guide for International Students -
Contact Us First: Reach out early! Email trlaviation@aol.com or call (972) 524-1601. Tell us your goals (e.g., Private Pilot from zero time, converting a foreign license, adding a Multi-Engine rating), current experience, timeline, and nationality. We'll provide personalized advice, estimated costs, and help determine if our program fits your visa needs.
Determine Your Visa Requirements:
Most international students pursuing FAA flight training need an M-1 vocational student visa (for non-academic programs like flight school).
Tourist (B-1/B-2) or Visa Waiver Program entries are generally not sufficient for primary flight training, especially if it's full-time.
If you're already in the U.S. on another status, you may need to change status or apply for an M-1.
Permanent residents (green card holders) don't need a student visa but follow TSA steps. Consult the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your country or an immigration advisor for your specific case.
Apply for TSA Approval (Flight Training Security Program - FTSP): All non-U.S. citizens (and some others) must get TSA clearance before starting flight lessons that lead to an FAA certificate or rating.
Create an account at the TSA FTSP website: https://fts.tsa.dhs.gov
Submit your application, upload required documents (passport, visa info if applicable, etc.), pay the fee ($130–$140), and provide fingerprints if requested.
This process can take weeks to months—start it early!
Approval is required before any flight training begins (ground school may start sooner in some cases). We can guide you on what to include for Terrell Aviation training.
Secure Funding and Prepare Documents: Demonstrate financial ability to cover training, living expenses, travel, and return travel (banks often require proof for visa applications). Gather: valid passport, English proficiency (if needed), high school diploma or equivalent (translated if necessary), and any prior aviation documents.
Apply for Your Visa (If Required):
Once you have TSA pre-approval (or while waiting), apply for your M-1 visa at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
Schedule an interview and bring supporting documents.
If using a school that issues I-20, complete their enrollment process first. Allow plenty of time; visa processing varies by country.
Plan Your Arrival and Training
Book flights to Dallas-area airports (e.g., DFW or DAL), then drive or arrange transport to Terrell (30-45 minutes east of Dallas).

Start with a discovery flight to get comfortable, then dive into your customized program.
Enjoy Texas hospitality, great flying weather, and an on-site KTRL based DPE for efficient checkrides where applicable.
